Hull City move for Cardiff City defender not dead yet

Hull City’s move for Cardiff City defender Matthew Connolly is not dead yet, according to Hull Live.

The 31-year-old passed a medical on Monday and it seemed that the deal was all but done. However, for whatever reason the move was not announced and Connolly headed back to Cardiff.

The Tigers have remained in contact with the Premier League side and the deal could still go through before the end of the month.

Connolly hasn’t played for Cardiff this season and only played four times last season under Neil Warnock as they were promoted to the Premier League. He still has a year left to run on his contract.

He started his career at Arsenal but never broke into their senior side. Instead, he enjoyed loan spells at AFC Bournemouth and Colchester United before he was snapped up by QPR in 2008.

Connolly went onto play over 100 games for the London side and was part of their side who won promotion to the top flight in 2011. Connolly then spent time on loan at Reading in the 2011/12 season and helped them get promoted from the Championship.

He then joined Cardiff in 2012 and has been there ever since, albeit for a brief loan spell at Watford 2015 in which he was part of another promotion winning team.

Connolly will add some back-up to Hull’s defence. He has plenty of experience of getting promotion, which isn’t completely out of the question for the Tigers after their miraculous rise up the Championship table.

Nigel Adkins’ side are looking at other defensive options to Connolly with the move hitting a snag, despite there still being a chance of completion. The72 looked at five alternatives yesterday.
