Stoke City’s hopes of signing long term target dented by latest comments

Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, Stoke City target Matt Ritchie has said that he is “desperate” to stay at St James’ Park with Newcastle United, adding that contract talks are underway.

Stoke City have been linked with a move for Newcastle United winger Matt Ritchie frequently over the course of the past few transfer windows, and links have re-emerged again in recent weeks.

Rumours have been circulating that the winger could make a move away from Newcastle this summer, despite featuring heavily for Rafael Benitez’s side at a new role of left wing-back.

But, Ritchie has come out to say that he is keen to remain on Tyneside and steps are being made in the right direction to ensure he can do so.

“Of course,” Ritchie said when asked if he would like to remain at the club.

“There are discussions at the moment, hopefully, we can get them resolved.

“This is a massive football club, I’m really enjoying playing for so until I’m told my services are no longer required, I’m fighting for my life as I do every week to perform. Who knows what the future holds but until I’m told my services are no longer required, I’ll do everything for the football club.”

Ritchie has been a mainstay in the Newcastle United starting eleven since joining from Bournemouth in 2016. He played an important role in helping them win promotion from the Championship in the 2016/17 season and has continued to star under Benitz in the Premier League.

A move to Stoke would have to see a drastic change of mind for both Newcastle and Ritchie. The asking price for the Scotsman would also make the deal no bargain, along with his Premier League wage packet.
