As reported by the Express and Star, Walsall have brought in midfielder Danny Guthrie in on trial, featuring in their 1-1 draw against Leamington Spa earlier this week.

Guthrie has been without a club since January and ahead of the new season, he is looking to get back into the game, with a return to the Football League potentially on the cards, He played 45 minutes for Darrell Clarke’s side, keeping the ball and showing impressive distribution in his cameo appearance for the Saddlers.

Former Liverpool youngster Guthrie had been out of the game for six months after his release from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2017, before making a move to Polish outfit Mitra Kukar. He spent a year with the Polish club before leaving in January 2019 and is now on the lookout for a contract.

The 32-year-old made his breakthrough into senior football with Liverpool, appearing seven times for the Reds’ first-team prior to his move to Newcastle United. To date, Newcastle is the club where Guthrie has made the most appearances, playing 104 times (nine goals, 16 assists) over the course of his four years with the club.

He joined Reading on a free transfer in 2012, remaining at the Madejski for four years before his move to Blackburn. Guthrie played 69 times for the Royals (four goals, four assists) and endured a brief loan spell with Fulham. At Ewood Park with Blackburn, Guthrie played 44 times before leaving the club.

Now, after bringing his time in Poland to an end, it will be interesting to see where Guthrie ends up, and if he earns himself a deal with Darrell Clarke’s side ahead of the new League Two season.
