Revealed: Stoke had loan move for Premier League player cancelled

Leicester City’s Filip Benkovic was denied a loan move to Stoke City after the Foxes prevented the deal from going ahead following Harry Maguire’s transfer to Manchester United.

According to reports in The Athletic, the Croatian defender was due to move to Staffordshire to link up with the Potters during the summer transfer window.

However, the move was cancelled at the last minute after Leicester failed to bring in a replacement for Maguire at centre-back.

It is understood that Brendan Rodgers attempted to sign a number of high-profile defenders, including Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake and Burnley’s James Tarkowski but no moves ever materialised.

Benkovic started his career in his home country as Dinamo Zagreb before Leicester snapped him up in August 2018 for a fee believed to be in the region of £13m.

However, he is yet to play in the league for the Foxes and has been limited to just one appearance in total for the East Midlands outfit.

Just weeks after joining the club, Benkovic was loaned out to SPL giants Celtic and he scored two goals in 20 appearances in the Hoops’ 2018/19 title-winning campaign.

He later returned to Leicester and looked set for another loan move away – this time to Stoke who have struggled for form in the Championship this season.

However, with no deals completed, Benkovic has since been left in the shadows at Leicester this season.
