Derby County and Birmingham City considering move for ex-Chelsea ‘keeper

According to a report from The Sun, Championship pair Derby County and Birmingham City are both monitoring the situation of Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic heading into the January transfer window.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has fallen way down the pecking order under Eddie Howe and is currently out on loan with Azerbaijani side Qarabag. Now, heading into the January transfer window, reports have now emerged claiming that clubs are plotting a move for the Bosnia and Herzegovina international next month.

Premier League outfit West Ham – who are currently without star keeper Lukasz Fabianski – are said to be considering a move for Begovic in the January transfer window, but they are not alone. Championship duo Derby County and Birmingham City have both been linked with a move for the former Chelsea goalkeeper, while Dutch side PSV Eindhoven are also interested in Begovic.

With Begovic’s current loan deal with Qarabag set to expire at the end of December, it is expected that he will not be remaining with Bournemouth. The ‘keeper is keen to head out on either a loan or permanent basis and with four clubs said keen, he could get his wish.

Begovic is vastly experienced at Premier League level, making a total of 252 appearances in the top flight for Portsmouth, Stoke City, Chelsea and Bournemouth. He has played a total of 15 matches while out on loan with Qarabag so far this season, keeping six clean sheets and conceding 15 goals along the way.

It will be interesting to see if the links between Derby County, Birmingham City and Begovic develop further heading into the January transfer window, with the window now just over three weeks away.
