Burnley 0-2 Bournemouth: Cherries reach FA Cup quarter-finals for first time in 64 years

Managerless Bournemouth reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in 64 years with victory at Premier League Burnley.

Sam Surridge put the Championship club ahead after connecting with Jack Stacey's low cross.

Junior Stanislas added the second from the penalty spot after Surridge was fouled.

Bournemouth, who have won both of their games under caretaker-manager Jonathan Woodgate, were deserved winners.

On a bad night for the Clarets, they were forced to make a late change when it was pointed out that defender Erik Pieters, who was named in the starting line-up, had been booked in the previous two rounds and was therefore suspended.

Bournemouth keeper Asmir Begovic saved from Matej Vydra and Dwight McNeil, while Jay Rodriguez blazed a great chance over from close range.

But the Cherries, who sacked Jason Tindall last week, were well organised and are in the quarter-finals for only the second time in their history.

Former Real Madrid and England defender Woodgate was coy when asked after the tie about the possibility of him landing the job full-time.

"Let's not get carried away," he said. "I've got Nottingham Forest for the next match. I know football can come back and bite you."

The visitors made the breakthrough against a Burnley side showing eight changes after David Brooks found Stacey, who crossed for Surridge to score from inside the six-yard area.

Burnley keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell saved a header from team-mate Dale Stephens which was heading for the net.

Stanislav's late penalty ended any hope of a Burnley comeback and Bournemouth find themselves one win away from a semi-final at Wembley.

The draw for the quarter-finals is on Thursday, with matches to take place across the weekend of 20-21 March.

'We didn't ask enough questions' - what they said

Burnley boss Sean Dyche: "We gave two soft goals away. We were chasing the game when we conceded the penalty. We made so many changes but it wasn't for lack of effort or desire.

"We missed a golden chance through Jay Rodriguez and asked a few questions but not enough. The difference in the performance is sometimes just a collective edge.

"Our keeper has hardly had a save to make. It didn't quite work out for us."

Bournemouth caretaker manager Jonathan Woodgate: "It went exactly as we wanted it but you need the players to execute it, and they did that.

"Every single one of them was very good, especially behind the ball and on the counter-attack. I thought we could have been a couple up at half-time.

"I said to the lads before the game, the more games you win the more confidence you'll get. It breeds confidence when you start winning back-to-back games."

    It’s not really a shock is it? Bournemouth were in Premier League last season and Burnley have been average at best this season. Some people are easily shocked.

    I cannot believe the side Burnley have put out tonight. Win tonight and they’re in the last 8, and they make 9/10 changes?! If I was a Burnley fan, I’d be going apes-t about Dyche tonight.

      Perspective. Everyone is playing 2 games a week and they need their strongest 11 fit as at they aren't safe from relegation yet. There's no quarter final trophy, but there is a huge cash incentive to not getting relegated

    Well done Bournemouth deserved win. As a Burnley fan I have to say our squad strength is none existent as was clearly seen today. We have 13-14 premier league players but beyond that not a lot . Club has little or no ambition anymore. After decades of my support and in particular the last 8 yrs I’m now becoming sadly disillusioned

    If you support a team like Burnley (and you're reasonably safe) - surely a cup run would be exciting and a change from the grind of the PL? Must be pretty dull never going on one, or trying for that matter

    Absolute pants from Burnley tonight. Yes they put out a weakened team but couldn't put 2 passes together. Well played Bournemouth, credit where credit is due.

    I like the way Burnley upset the big boys every now and then but surely there's more to being a football club than just trying to stay up every season. Its pointless having all that PL money if you arent going to try and actually win something. They probably only need 12 pts to be safe and they werent that bothered with the FA Cup? That's poor

    This result was expected. Burnley put out a weak team and played their anti-football style against a team who wanted to win. Pathetic little Burnley got what they deserved. Again.

    Best AFCB performance I've seen in the past 2-3 months.

    Getting tired of Burnley management's apathy towards FA Cup. That was so poor tonight. Yes, a win or draw at Palace on Saturday is vital but why can't our fans be given a proper cup run to cheer us up in lockdown?

      I'm sure Dyche would spend money if he could - but reality is that survival is more important than a competition that realistically they won't win. If this was the semi then I'm sure they would name the strongest line up possible - but they're away at Palace on Saturday and that game is more important than this.

    Deserved Clarets defeat. Didnt make a championship keeper work at all, gave the ball away countless times and didnt match B'Mouth intensity. I worry for Burnley this summer. Good performance from Cherries

    Good game once again spoilt by that awful Carney voice. I understand this is a PC box being ticked, but come, on that incessant whine just does me in. Surely they undertook some sort of voice check before taking on commentators don't they ?
